Blu-Ray Disc Founders announce next steps in establishing Blu-ray Disc as the next generation optical disc formatSupport from IT industry for true convergence between CE and ITLas Vegas, USA, January 8th, 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show: The Blu-ray Disc Founders (BDF), comprised of 10 leading CE companies, formalized the next steps in establishing Blu-ray Disc as the next generation optical disc format. The ten companies involved -Hitachi, Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, and Thomson welcome the support from Hewlett-Packard Company and Dell Inc., the two leading IT manufacturers, underlining the true convergence between CE and IT industry, enabled by Blu-ray Disc. It is a major and important milestone in meeting the requirements and wishes of the content and related industries, as well as addressing consumer expectations. In addition, the Blu-ray Disc Founders are in the process of finalizing the complete format specifications portfolio. The BD-ROM (read-only) format, developed in collaboration with Hollywood studios and the IT industry, is expected to be available early 2004, allowing for BD-ROM products to be available by the end of 2005. The BD-R (write-once) format is expected to be finalized by mid 2004, and the BD-RE (rewritable) format, which is already available, will be further expanded to cover additional requirements of the related industries. Convergence between CE and IT domainsThe support from HP and Dell, the largest PC manufacturers, is an important step in providing the industry and consumers with one format that covers both PC as well as CE applications. "HP believes Blu-ray Disc is the most consumer-friendly technology choice for the next generation of removable storage," said John Romano, Senior Vice President, Consumer PC Organization, Hewlett-Packard Company. "With ever-expanding uses for digital discs in the market, HP believes Blu-ray Disc will allow for the seamless interchange between consumer electronics and personal computers, thus protecting an individuals' technology investment as well as expanding their digital capabilities. HP is committed to making technology easier to use and supports the proliferation of Blu-ray Disc. HP is looking forward to joining the Blu-ray Disc Founders in the very near future". "Dell is committed to driving industry standards that meet the needs of our customers, said Gerry Smith, Vice President, Peripheral Development and Procurement, Dell Inc. The significant storage capacity the Blu-ray Disc format provides combined with broad industry support from both CE and PC manufacturers and large entertainment companies make it an obvious choice for next generation optical storage. Next level in consumer experienceBlu-ray Disc is developed in response to industry trends like HDTV and Broadband Internet to provide convergence, interactivity and cross-platform compatibility. It delivers the highest data rate of any consumer media, and the highest recording density that allows for more than 4 hours of high definition video to be stored onto one single sided disc, delivering a new, high definition, viewing experience, with additional capacity to include extensive added-value content and interactive applications using broadband Internet. Support from content industryTo balance the rights of all parties involved, including the needs of the content industry, Blu-ray Disc contains a robust copy protection mechanism as well as stringent licensing conditions. Benjamin S. Feingold, President, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, stressed that the economics of the film industry are now based on the success of packaged media and how Blu-ray Disc delivers the best solution. Mr. Feingold also noted "the motion picture industry needs to move to a more secure format that keeps packaged media preeminent in the delivery of high definition movies to the home". |
