DVD Burning .biz's DVD Guide brings you all the DVD know-how
and technical information you need to get burning.
For professionals or home users, we'll walk you through the process step by
step. The
process of making a DVD-ROM is easy! You use a DVD Burning Software
program like GEAR Video to build a project. You add any files to the project
that you would like, up to the 4.7 GB capacity of a recordable DVD. You
burn the disc, and you have a DVD-ROM. The process of
creating a DVD-Video is more complicated. The basic steps for home users
are ...
- Capture your video (transfer it to your PC). Usually
this is done by connecting a DV camcorder to your PC through a firewire
(IEEE-1394, or in Sony terminology, i-link) connection. A Video
Editing program is usually used to help you perform this process.
- Edit the video. Programs such as Adobe Premier or
Vegas Video are the usual choice for the PC. Apple users will use i-movie
or Final Cut Pro. The video editing process can include cutting or
re-arranging the scenes in your video, adding transitions between scenes
(such as fades or wipes), adding sound tracks, creating special video
effects, and adding titles.
- Compress the video. Although the DV video is already
compressed, the data rate (25 Megabits per second) is still too high for
DVD. DVD Video can have a total data rate of no more than 9.8 Megabits
per second, including audio or subpicture information. A typical DVD
has an average video bit rate of 3 or 4 Megabits per second, although
shorter selections may use higher average bit rates to improve the video
quality. See MPEG Encoders for more
information about this step.
- Create Menu Graphics and Author the disc. While this
is sometimes done as separate steps in separate programs, home users will
typically accomplish both of these steps in one program. See DVD
Authoring Software for more information.
- Burn the disc to DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, or DVD+RW. See
DVD Burning Software or DVD
Burners.
