analog A continuous signal. Audio, for instance, is a continuing variation of air pressure. This change in air pressure can be picked up with a microphone (a transducer), and converted into an electrical signal. The voltage of the electrical signal coming from the microphone varies in direct proportion to the change in air pressure. Analog signals are not made up of discrete units, like digital signals. Analog signals can be converted to digital signals using a variety of coding schemes. This process is generally referred to as sampling, or A/D conversion. Digital signals which represent analog signals can be converted back to analog signals, in a process known as D/A conversion.
