DVD Burning Glossary aspect ratio The ratio of the width to the height of an image. For instance, the aspect ratio of a standard NTSC television screen is 4:3 (four by three). This ratio is equal to 1.33:1. A widescreen television has an aspect ratio of 16:9 (sixteen by nine), which is equal to 1.78:1. Movies, which are normally shot on film, commonly have an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, or 2.35:1. In other words, movies are normally wider than televisions.
