bit

A contraction of "binary digit".  The binary number system is based on powers of 2.  A binary digit, or bit, is either a one or a zero.  It represents the value of any digit in a binary number.  A bit is the smallest unit for digital data.  Since DVDs are a digital storage media format, all information is encoded as digital data, or as bits (ones or zeros).
